Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Two teenagers were shot outside of a large apartment complex in East Williamsburg yesterday. Close to 3 p.m., police responded to a report of a double shooting at 200 Maujer St. Two teenagers were shot and rushed to the hospital by EMS. According to police, a woman, 17, was shot in the abdomen, and a man, 19, was grazed in the head — latest reports are saying both are in stable condition. The scene was still active as of Monday evening, and police are looking for a suspect who fled south from the scene along Humboldt Street. Neighbors say that high school kids frequently fight in the area and are now concerned that the fights have potentially escalated to gun violence.
2. An off-duty police officer was arrested after drunkenly smashing into parked cars and allegedly firing his gun at an Uber driver. An NYPD officer made a wild scene in Bed-Stuy over the weekend when he crashed into three parked cars and shot his gun at a bystander in what is believed to have been a booze-fueled trip. The man's car was too damaged to drive after the crash, and he is believed to have hailed an Uber. However, after an altercation, the off-duty officer allegedly pulled his gun on the driver. Police responded near Tompkins Avenue and Vernon Avenue to a 911 call of shots fired around 2 a.m., where they arrested the man — he failed a breathalyzer. Charges are pending and the man, an off-duty officer stationed at a precinct in the Bronx, has been suspended.
3. There are more seniors over 65 in NYC than there are people in any other city in New York State, and one fifth of them live in poverty. A report conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons New York found that the number of people over 65 in NYC — 3.5 million — is larger than the entire combined population of 21 states. Another report from The Center for an Urban Future found that more than one-in-five people over the age of 65 are living in poverty in Brooklyn. The number of residents over 65 have surged in the borough over the last 10 years by more than 100,000, according to the Feb. 1 report, 'Keeping Pace With an Aging New York State.' That's the largest population increase of any county in New York. The spike in Brooklyn's aging population can be attributed in part to a growth in the older migrant population over the past decade, a group that account for 58 percent of the borough's elderly. These days, close to 81,000 aging Brooklynites live below the poverty threshold, and CUF is urging local officials to strengthen their support for the borough's elderly.

🐝 Brooklyn Buzz:
- Adoptable pets in the Brooklyn area! "Over 6 million companion animals are surrendered or taken in each year by adoption agencies nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However, only around half of all shelter pets are adopted each year, ASPCA data shows. This means millions of animals — some right here in the Brooklyn area — are still waiting for their forever homes." Visit the link to learn more. (Brooklyn Patch)
