Remembering When Malcolm Met Fidel in Harlem!
On Saturday, September 26th, 2020, the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee (MXCC) will host another powerful virtual roundtable... “When The Revolution Came: Observing the 60th Anniversary of the legendary Meeting of Malcolm X and Fidel Castro”...Live! On Facebook and YouTube at 5pm.

Panther political prisoner Veronza Bowers will be the special political prisoner spotlight for the monthly webinar. As this first went to press on September 15th, Bowers marked the haunting anniversary of being taken into custody 47 years ago! Like several other Panther political prisoners still incarcerated as a consequence of FBI COINTELPRO targeting, he has served his time, but authorities are refusing to even give him consideration for release on Parole. Bowers was convicted of killing a Park Ranger on what many legal critics call at best circumstantial evidence.

The Malcolm X Commemoration Committee has been doing these monthly political prisoner spotlights to take the place of their annual Dinner Tribute to the Families because of the Covid19 Pandemic.
On September 19th, 1960, Malcolm X met Fidel Castro at the Hotel Theresa. The U.S. government, hostile to Cuba’s new Socialist government, made it impossible for Cuba’s delegation stay in Manhattan for United Nations’ Annual General Assembly meeting. Malcolm encouraged Cuba’s new revolutionary leader to come and stay in Harlem at the Theresa. That sparked an electric week for Harlem as heads of state and delegations from other newly independent nations and the former Soviet Union came up to Harlem to also meet with the Cuban delegation. Egypt’s Gamal Nasser, Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah and the former Soviet Union’s Nikita Khrushchev, were among the leaders who came uptown to express Solidarity with the Cuban Delegation. Their visits drew huge supportive rallies. That meeting would lead to an enormous enduring relationship between Cuba and the Radical AfricanAmerican Tradition. It also marked an ascendant moment for the NonAligned Movement at the height of the Cold War...
