95-Year-Old Woman Dies In Canarsie House Fire, Police Say

Anna Barthelemy died in a house fire on East 93rd Street Saturday evening, said police.

CANARSIE, BROOKLYN — An elderly woman was killed when a Brooklyn home caught on fire Saturday evening.

Anna Barthelemy, 95, was trapped in the basement when flames ripped through her home on East 93rd Street near Avenue K at about 5 p.m, said police.

Firefighters rushed to extinguish the blaze, but were unable to save the elderly woman’s life and she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said,

The electrical fire, which was caused by a faulty power strip, was ruled accidental by Fire Marshals who noted there were no functioning fire alarms in the home.

Barthelemy’s daughter Esther Benoit told the New York Post she tried to save her mother, but was overpowered by the smoke in the basement.

“I tried to go downstairs, but I couldn’t see where to put my feet,” Benoit said. “I know I couldn’t lift her up, but [I thought] maybe I could drag her.”
