Here are the top five stories today in Buffalo:
- Dr. Stacey Reed, the county's associate chief medical examiner, places blame on the Erie County Holding Center for an inmate's death. In the autopsy report, inmate Sean C. Riordan's June 2022 death is named the result of "complications of chronic ethanolism." It states that he became unresponsive after his final seizure, which were likely caused by alcohol withdrawal. Dr. Reed wrote, "while the medical care that the decedent received prior to his admission to hospital was inadequate, it does not rise to the level of criminal neglect" and suggests more training for jail staff. - The Erie County Democratic Party unanimously voted to censure Erie County Councilman Jim Winarski. In a statement, the party said, "he has continuously voted with the Republican minority and failed to support his Democrat peers for leadership." While publicly expressing disappointment, the censure does not carry other actions with it. For more information, read Erie News Now.
- The SPCA is currently looking for volunteers to help in its West Seneca shelter. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and would assist in matters of adoption, behavior, foster care, kitten nursery and more. Learn how to apply via WGRZ 2.
- An overnight shooting on Orlando Street is being investigated by the Buffalo police. The department has said that a 29-year-old Cheektowaga woman was shot during an argument at a party. Learn more at WKBW 7.
- Josh's Jaqs and JA17 have donated an additional $120,000 to Oishei Children's Hospital. Despite yesterday's loss, the Bills season has proven fruitful in an array of local ways. Read more at WIVB 4.
