📰 News we're reading

• Something Sinister: Tullis Johnson on Charles E. Burchfield's Haunted Landscapes (Podcast) (buffalorising.com) — Buffalo's Burchfield Penney Art Center is launching "Something Sinister: The Haunted Landscapes of Charles E. Burchfield" on October 29, 2026, running through late February. Curator Tullis Johnson explains how the show connects Burchfield's eerie, emotionally charged scenes to Western New York's identity, inviting Buffalonians to see familiar landscapes and architecture in a more haunted, imaginative light.

• Proposal to close 8 Buffalo schools draws both support, opposition from parents (wgrz.com) — Buffalo families could see eight public schools close or be restructured starting in 2027–28, affecting about 2,300 students, over 100 staff positions, and key bilingual programs. Parents and advocates are sharply divided, with some organizing to save PS 33 in South Buffalo while others argue the district must "right size" amid declining enrollment and budget pressures.

• Buffalo police shut down Chippewa bar after owner charged in stabbing (wkbw.com) — Buffalo police have shut down the Cowboy Bar on Chippewa Street after charging its 72-year-old owner in a stabbing that injured a valet Friday night. The closure comes amid a broader city push to curb violence on Chippewa, including weekend street closures to traffic, stricter code enforcement, and calls for bar owners to partner more closely with officials on safety.
