2 evenings of Composition and Movement: Nina Winthrop & Jon Gibson / Deborah Gladstein & Garth Stevenson
Brooklyn, NY: Roulette presents two evenings of composition and movement featuring Gibson & Nina Winthrop, November 18 and Deborah Gladstein & Garth Stevenson, November 19. Both pairs work intensely together to explore the unique connection between movement and sound.
Nina Winthrop & Jon Gibson, November 18, 8pm
Nina Winthrop & Jon Gibson will present two pieces Constraints II and Three Lives and Something both pieces choreographed by Nina Winthrop with original compositions and live performance by Jon Gibson. Developed during an exciting one month residency at Tokyo's Morishita Studio, Constraints II is the Japanese counterpart to Constraints I and III, created with support from the Asian Cultural Council. Three Lives and Something features four lanes that separate the dancers’ movements, derived from everyday activities. Throughout the piece, the four dancers move back and forth in the parallel lanes of their physically separated, yet thematically connected lives. JOn Gibson will also perform Duet with dancer Joanna Kotze. Duet will feature original choreography and solo saxophone performance.
Deborah Gladstein & Garth Stevenson, November 19, 8pm
Movement artist Deborah Gladstein and bassist/composer Garth Stevenson collaborate to present In the Shadows a site-specific work celebrating the poetic and mysterious possibilities of movement and sound woven together. This original piece pays tribute to Roulette's newly renovated historic Art-Deco theater. Using a travel-sized upright acoustic bass, the musician is free to move with his instrument through space so that the bass itself becomes another “partner” in the dance.
