Man Sentenced In Attempted Rape Of Central Park Sunbather: Prosecutors

A man has been convicted of attempted rape after attacking a Central Park sunbather.

CENTRAL PARK, NY — A man who attempted to rape a woman in Central Park has been sentenced to 13 years in state prison, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said Wednesday.

According to Bragg, the defendant, 45-year-old Jermaine Longmire, exposed himself to a 21-year-old woman who was sunbathing in the park near West Drive and West 104th Street around 1:30 p.m. back on June 24, 2024.

"Jermaine Longmire is facing significant time in state prison for attempting to rape a woman who was trying to enjoy her day off in Central Park," Bragg said.

The woman screamed as Longmire approached and tried to escape, but before she could run, he tackled her from behind, pinned her down and attempted to rape her, Bragg said.

The survivor managed to fight off her attacker for a second time, eventually causing him to flee down West Drive, Bragg said. The survivor had injuries all over her body from the attack, Bragg said.

"I want to thank the survivor for bravely testifying in this trial," Bragg said. "I hope this sentencing can offer a sense of closure as she continues to heal from this traumatic assault."

A New York State Supreme Court jury convicted Longmire on one count each of attempted rape in the first degree and sexual abuse in the first degree.

"New Yorkers and visitors alike deserve to feel safe in Manhattan’s parks," Bragg said.

Following 13 years in prison, Longmire will be under 15 years of post-release supervision.
