Boys Lacrosse Preview: Fox Lane and Horace Greeley
Foxes look to defend league crown, while veteran defense returns for Quakers.
Fox Lane
Last year Fox Lane enjoyed a solid season as it won its league with a 6-1 record and finished the regular season 10-6 overall. The Foxes’ goals are to repeat as league champs and take home a sectional crown in what is a rugged Class B, said senior co-captain and midfielder Sam Robinson.
“We are going to be in a slightly tougher league than last season,” Robinson said. “With that in mind, we have pretty good expectations for ourselves and we definitely are hoping to win both the league and the section.”

Leading the attack are seniors Dylan Faitell, George Lodge (co-captain), Josh Wollman and sophomore Zach Wolosoff. For Wolosoff it is his first year on the varsity but he has been impressive so far in the preseason according to Robinson.
“Our attack is very good at working with the middies and feeding the shooters,” Robinson said. “They have a very good sense of the offense.”

The Foxes key midfielders are seniors Robinson, Joe Corsi (co-captain), John Horner (co-captain), Graham Werner, Matt Krouch and junior Nick Grasso.
Robinson said that the Foxes’ strength at midfield is its speed, athleticism and ability to dodge to initiate the offense.
“We are all comfortable shooting from the outside as well as well as dodging and feeding attackmen,” Robinson said.
Keying the Foxes solid defensive unit is junior Anthony Grasso, seniors Oliver Silzer, Matt Harris, Collin Proctor and sophomore Christian Magnan, a long-stick middie who is in his second year on the varsity.
Each of the Fox Lane defensemen are fundamentally sound, athletic, have good stick skills and play a really good home-defensive system, according to Robinson.
Backing them up in goal is senior co-captain Cameron Stephens, who will play at Ohio State University next season.
“He is a really good quarterback of the defense,” Robinson said. “He lets everyone know where they should be. He’s a phenomenal goalie.”
Fox Lane will open its season when it hosts Bronxville at noon, Saturday, April 2.
Horace Greeley
The Quakers maybe coming off a 6-11 campaign but their coach, Vin DeGregorio, points out that is deceiving because of the tough schedule it played a year ago.
“We were below .500 but we played one of the toughest schedules in Section 1,” DeGregorio said. “We have a veteran returning defense and although we are young on offense, we are doing a great job of being team oriented. We are moving the ball pretty fast.”
Helping the Quakers move that ball on attack are juniors Alex Scott and Jack Gladstone.
“They combined last year for about 60 points,” DeGregorio said. “They are both leaders on the offensive end. They are very consistent and are great team players.”
Key midfielders for Greeley are seniors Mike Lentini and Josh Begleiter.
“Josh is our face-off guy,” DeGregorio said. “He is pretty dominant at the face-off X, going after groundballs. He is a great defensive player that I can use anywhere on the field. Mike Lentini is pretty much going to be the quarterback of our offense. He is a great setup guy. He’s great in-between the lines.”
Seniors Brian Dubs, who is going to Hamilton College next year, Joe Hinderstein and Jason Bressler are the defensive cornerstones.
Dubs is a hard-nosed defenseman, who has excellent stick skills and is great on ground balls. Hinderstein, a co-captain, is a two-sport athlete who is a veteran in hockey and in lacrosse, is a two-year starter. He’s a great one on one defenseman and is dangerous in open field with the ball
DeGregorio said that Bressler is probably the Quakers most physical defenseman, who has excellent one on one skills.
Manning the goal for the Quakers is senior co-captain Gabe Weissmann.
“He is a solid stopper,” DeGregorio said. “He will be playing at Middlebury next year. He’s the vocal leader on the defense. He will be a two-year starter.”
Greeley will open its season at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 at Scarsdale.
