Changing The Face Of Route 100: Millwood Market
Construction starts after five years of planning.
As residents and travelers cruise along Route 100 in Millwood, eyes are turning toward the new construction site adjacent to the entrance to the Taconic State Parkway North.
As people return from their summer vacations, they will see that buildings have been leveled in preparation for the new Millwood Market.
This new development is the brainchild of John DeMeo, the proprietor of the site. While operating the Shell station on his property, he envisioned something more, something that would be an even greater asset to the town. After five years of working with the Town of New Castle, approval for his plans was granted and demolition work has begun. DeMeo called his property "the entrance to Northern Westchester." Once the project is completed, he said, it will be "a gorgeous addition to the neighborhood."

A new two-story structure will be erected. The convenience store on the ground level will sell products including milk, eggs, butter, hot dogs, cigarettes, and coffee. Office space will be located on the second floor. The Shell station will reopen. Extensive landscaping in and around the property will be added. A sidewalk will be installed in front, from the entrance to the parkway to the bus stop.
DeMeo has been involved with the community since he acquired the site. He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Chappaqua. "Our business will always be engaged in the town," DeMeo said. He has two children, aged 24 and 27, who will be working with him. "It's a family business," he said.

He looks forward to making donations to local causes once the business is reopened. The project is slated for completion in December 2010.
Dianne Kleinmann, chairperson of the Millwood Task Force, echoed DeMeo's sentiments. She said the site is of particular importance because it is located at the west entrance to the town. In her view, the development is "a very positive thing. It's going to be very attractive." Its proximity to the rail trail will also render it an asset for bikers. Thirsty cyclists will see it as an oasis. Bike racks will be installed.
Kleinmann said DeMeo was dedicated. "He's been listening to suggestions from the beginning."
