Chappaqua Students, Firefighters Part of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

The event drew about 20,000 participants and raised $1.2 million.

CHAPPAQUA, NY — Local students and firefighters were among the 20,000 residents who came together Oct. 16 at Manhattanville College in Purchase for the 22nd Annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

Those people also raised more than $1.2 million to help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer.

“Our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk ensures no one faces breast cancer alone by bringing the community together, funding innovative breast cancer research, promoting education and risk reduction and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most," said Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Manager for the Society.

While significant progress in the fight against breast cancer has been made, more needs to be done. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, other than skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2016, an estimated 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer (16,360 in NY) and 40,450 will die from the disease this year (2,410 in NY).
