Football Preview: Greeley Looks to Season With Strong Roster
Justin Ciero, Hiro Asaga and Teddy Graves, among the starters.

Last year Horace Greeley finished as the Section 1 Class A finalist, losing to eventual state finalist Harrison 6-0 in the Class A championship game in a season that saw it register a 7-2 record.
Greeley has a great chance of returning to the title game again this year thanks to the return of senior quarterback Justin Ciero, who is one of the elite players in all of Section 1.
“He is genetically superior to a lot of people; he is just a great athlete,” Greeley coach Bill Tribou said. “He’s got all the great-skill related components of fitness but mostly he has extreme balance and is able to make cuts and things like that effortlessly.”

Helping Ciero in the backfield, whose team started practice on Friday, is senior running back Hiro Asaga. He will be a handful for the opposition to handle.
“He can run away from you or he can run you over,” Tribou said.

Junior all-purpose player Teddy Graves provides the Quakers someone who is a great blocker down field in addition to having great speed and very good hands, according to Tribou.
The above will be working behind an offensive line where teamwork will be imperative.
“It’s going to be a collective group effort with a lot of players involved,” Tribou said.
Defensively, the key players for Greeley will be senior defensive tackles Jordan Levy and Tyler Ferguson.
“Jordan was a starter last year and he was the strongest player on the team,” Tribou said. “He has incredible numbers in the weight room.”
Ferguson is someone who can build on his experience of being a four-year varsity player.
“He hasn’t played a whole lot but he has great experience in practice and he has also had some fine university-type camps this summer,” Tribou said.
Tribou said the team’s goal this year is to win the league first and “then we take it from there.”
Greeley will open the season hosting Roosevelt of Yonkers 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10.
“For us, the keys are always a low turnover ratio and ability to tackle defensively,” Tribou said.
