Fox Lane Graduate Receives Degree from Susquehanna University

Erin McGarrah, of Mount Kisco, graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design as Susquehanna University closed its 158th academic year with annual commencement exercises on May 15, 2016. A 2012 graduate of Fox Lane High School, she is the daughter of Bob and Stephanie McGarrah.

Journalist Kim Barker, best known for her memoir The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, stood before the Class of 2016 and offered this advice: "Life is short, and you don't want to get to the middle or end of it by playing it safe." Barker's memoir, a look back on her years as South Asia bureau chief for the Chicago Tribune, was adapted into the film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which features Tina Fey as Barker. The keynote address honored the university's theme for the 2015-16 academic year, Adventure, a relevant topic for this year's graduates as they embark on a new phase of life.

Susquehanna conferred degrees upon 436 students in the field house of the James W. Garrett Sports Complex.
