Foxes Takedown Somers At Home

Foxes won, 50-22, continuing a strong season.

The Fox Lane wrestling team once again outmatched its opponent with a win last night against Somers. After 15 grueling matches, the Foxes won 50-22.

The crowd may have started out small, but by the second half there were easily 100 people in the room. All eyes were on the center mat where the Fox Lane Foxes battled the Tuskers from Somers.  It was apparent from the first match that the Foxes meant business, when 103-pound Sam Speno pinned Kyle Turchick.  "That pin set the tone for us," Speno said.

Speno's pin was just one of several pins delivered by the Foxes last night. In the seventh match and in the 140-pound class, Giancarlo Morreale pinned Mark Lasar in 3:12.  This was followed by another win by pinning in the 145-pound class by John Giallorenzi against Tusker Cavel Casseta.

Fox Lane Head Coach Joe Amuso was proud of his team. "We're having a good year," he said.

It wasn't completely one-sided, and Somers did manage to score points and even get some pins.  In the second match, Brian Realbuto of Somers beat Fox Lane's Tom Grippi. Realbuto was favored as he won Somers' first State Championship last year in the 103-pound weight class.

In the 160-pound class, Fox John Grecco defeated Jason DiBenedetto 17-2. Next, in the 189-pound class, Joe Izzo of Somers pinned Zack Patierno in under a minute.

As for the highly anticipated heavy weight classes of 200 pounds and over, both teams performed well.  The crowd was on its feet for the 215-pound class. In a nail-biting match that went into overtime, Fox Lane's Daniel Clune beat Somers' Nick Gian Castro.

In the grand finale of the evening, the weight class was at 285 pounds.  Fox Lane's Julian Mastro put up a good fight, but was overcome and pinned by Tusker Ryan Englent just 1:24 into the match
