Great Chappaqua Bake Sale Shines in "Good Housekeeping"

The July issue of Good Housekeeping highlights the Great Chappaqua Bake Sale’s efforts to raise money for Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, and co-founder Allison Spiegel is proud.

But not of herself or friends Jessica Reinmann and Holly Blum, with whom she started the annual fundraising event five years ago.

"We are so proud of our small town for making a BIG difference in the fight against childhood hunger," she said. "This article is a testament to every business, baker, volunteer and child who has helped make the event such a fundraising success."

So far, the Great Chappaqua Bake Sale has raised more than $50,000 to fund meals programs in New York State that feed children school breakfasts and summer meals.

They started out small—a few tables with a few goodies—but now it's as if the whole hamlet is involved in baking and buying.

"Children in this town are fortunate — they have enough food, go to good schools," Spiegel told Good Housekeeping. "Our kids have a different way of thinking because of our bake sale. It's so powerful to watch them."

Share Our Strength and Good Housekeeping magazine have launched the 1 in 5 campaign (Good Housekeeping magazine reaches 1 in 5 American women and 1 in 5 children in the US struggle with hunger every day) to help raise funds to fuel programs that feed hungry children who would otherwise not have regular nutritious meals.

"We are busy preparing for the 5th Annual Great Chappaqua Bake Sale at the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival on September 27th, and will have more exciting details to share about this year’s event in the coming weeks," Spiegel said.
