Greeley Beats John Jay on Its Senior Night

Horace Greeley's boys basketball team started a team of all seniors on Senior Appreciation Night and defeated John Jay 67-39.

Playing arguably its biggest game of the season, Horace Greeley took care of business on senior appreciation night.

The host Quakers got contributions from everywhere against visiting John Jay as they cruised to a 67-39 victory in yesterday's Class A matchup. The Quakers have six seniors on their team and they all came out in unison wearing headbands and high socks to show their school spirit.

Some who are usually in the rotation and others who get limited time all got plenty of action against the Indians. The players who weren't seniors, including junior standout Matt Townsend, were restricted to spot minutes as a demonstration of respect and love for the hard work and dedication over the years of the senior players.

"I was really proud of our guys tonight," Quakers Coach Dave Fernandes said. "We started all seniors tonight and they got a majority of the minutes. Some of those guys don't always get the minutes but they played together and really made plays for us tonight."

Adam Honig, a team captain and regular starter, represented well for the seniors, and the guard led the Quakers with a game-high 18 points. Honig scored 10 of his 18 points in the first half and led Greeley into the half up 35-22.

"I've been on this team since a sophomore and this was a big night for the senior class and it was everything I imagined and more," Honig said. "They played box-and-one on me, but my teammates were still finding me out there and I was able to knock down a few jumpers."

In the second half John Jay did go on an early run to knock the deficit down to seven points behind the inside presence of senior forward Sam Kuhn who scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the second half.

As a team, John Jay scored 18 in the second half and really had no easy baskets because of the Quakers' intense defense and strong defensive rebounding.

Once Townsend was inserted into the game a little less than midway into the third quarter, he made his presence felt right away and gave his team a huge boost. He had seven points and seven rebounds in his unfamiliar role of coming off the bench.
