Greeley Loses Close Game to Yorktown

Quakers defeated 65-63 in tournament heartbreaker.

People were sitting at the edges of their seats, staring intensely at the clock as the Horace Greeley Quakers played the Yorktown Huskers. With one minute left, Yorktown was leading with 65 points, but Greeley fans were still hopeful because the Quakers were only two points behind. With a few seconds left Greeley fought hard but was defeated.

The Quakers, Horace Greeley's boy basketball team lost to Yorktown 63-65 at the George Budries Yorktown Boys and Girls Basketball Memorial Tournament at Yorktown High School on Dec. 29.

At the end of the game the team looked sullen and their coach, Dave Fernandes was not happy.

"They played great," he said as he pointed to the Yorktown team. "But they (Greeley) played absolutely terrible. I am very disappointed."

The fans, however, were entertained.

The stands were flooded with people. Greeley students and parents were adorned in orange and blue scarves and sweatshirts. They screamed with high intensity and jumped up and down during halftime when the Quakers were leading 29-26.

As the game started again, Yorktown's playing improved.

"What are you doing!," Fernandes yelled at his team.

"You see you should have five people as defense and our team only had one," he said after the game.

Yorktown fans cheered and screamed "Go Home!" to the rival team.

The outcome was in contrast to the day before. In the tournament opener, The Quakers defeated the Sleepy Hollow Horsemen 71-53.

Even though a number of people walked past the team and told them they played an excellent game, Fernandes was not satisfied.

"I am going to challenge them," he said. "If my team does not start playing,  I am going to get the younger kids."
