John Jay Hands Fox Lane Girls Lax First Loss of Season

Casey Bocklet led the Indians with eight goals, five coming in the second half.

The John Jay Indians beat the Fox Lane Foxes yesterday, 19-10 in a girls lacrosse game putting the Foxes into a first-place tie for the league title.

Fox Lane was previously undefeated, having won its first 11 games on the year. John Jay's only loss was to Fox Lane earlier this season.

"This was a big win for us," John Jay Coach Gail Lozado said.

The Indians, who led 9-6 at the half, were fortunate to be on the healthy side with players back from injuries.

It wasn't so bright for the Foxes.

Coach Bill Broggy's squad was out-dueled in the rivalry game.

"They just out-played us in all aspects of the game," he said.

This included ground balls, pressure on defense, transitions and offensive production.

Fox Lane had previously defeated John Jay in a close 21-20 win on April 21 but John Jay appeared more focused this time around.

"We connected better than they did," Lozado said.

Lozado credits the phenomenal play of her goalie Veronica Brady, who had 13 saves in the win.

"She was outstanding," Lozado said.

Casey Bocklet was a constant threat, leading the Indians with eight goals, five of them coming in the second half along. She also had  three assists.

Broggy tried to stop John Jay's momentum with a timeout after the Indians had scored three straight goals to pull ahead 13-7, but Bocklet continued to dominate.

Lindsay Toppe scored five goals for the Foxes.

John Jay hosts Lakeland/Panas in another important game on Monday. Meanwhile, Fox Lane will look to bounce back with an interstate match up against New Canaan on Saturday. Both teams will likely need to win the rest of their league games to have a chance at winning the league championship based on standings.
