Mayor De Blasio proclaims "Ernie Anastos" Day in New York

Legendary TV Anchor and Westchester County resident honored

Famed New York City television news anchor Ernie Anastos will be honored at a special reception by Mayor Bill De Blasio at his official residence, Gracie Mansion, in Manhattan today, March 21, at 7 pm. De Blasio will present the multi-Emmy award winning legend with an official proclamation marking March 21st as "Ernie Anastos Day" in New York for his outstanding contributions to the city for more than three decades. The mayor will recognize Anastos as a distinguished television anchor who has gained the respect and admiration of New Yorkers for his coverage of historic news and community events during his illustrious career in New York. The Hall of Fame Broadcaster is also a celebrated author of children's books and has devoted his career to various educational and philanthropic projects throughout Manhattan.

"It's absolutely amazing to be honored by the city of New York, the greatest place in the world and the people I love the most,” said Anastos.

Mayor De Blasio's salute to Anastos and his Greek heritage coincides with the celebration of Greek Independence Day and the annual parade on Fifth Avenue Sunday, March 26th.

As a seasoned anchor and reporter, Anastos has covered the major stories that have shaped the last three decades, including the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. a meeting with Fidel Castro in Cuba and a series of special reports on the anniversary of the Cuban revolution. As part of an official pastoral trip, he has traveled to the war-torn countries of El Salvador and Nicaragua. Anastos has interviewed top world leaders including Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, as well as Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and South African Bishop Desmond Tutu.


Ernie Anastos has gained national experience as a news anchor and substitute host for “ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “CBS Morning News.” He has created and hosted information programs for CBS, Lifetime and ABC, and appeared in major motion pictures and primetime dramas such as “Independence Day” and “Summer of Sam.”


Anastos is a celebrated author, most recently introducing a series of children’s books titled, Ernie and the Big Newz, with proceeds donated to The Make-A-Wish Foundation. Previously, he wrote a historical book on the lifestyle of America’s youth entitled Twixt: Teens Yesterday and Today, which was featured at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. and applauded in The New York Times. Anastos has also been a regular columnist for the leading woman’s magazine Family Circle.


As a Phi Kappa Phi honoree, he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Northeastern University, where he is a noted member of the university corporation. He holds Honorary Doctorate degrees from Marist College, NYIT, Manhattanville College, Curry College and Sacred Heart University.
