New Castle Starts 'It's Too Hot' Campaign

Just as temperatures rise into the 90s again, New Castle town officials are starting an educational campaign to increase awareness about never leaving your pets in a parked car.

Not even for a minute, says New Castle Supervisor Rob Greenstein.

On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or die.

And it’s a crime in NY. You can be fined and police officers may take necessary steps to remove animal from vehicle.

“We are committed to protecting our pets,” Greenstein stated. “Leaving a pet in a hot vehicle will put your pet at risk of serious illness or death.”

Here are 3 easy steps for town residents to take if they see a pet left in a hot car:

1. Call the New Castle Police Department at (914) 238-4422.
2. Take down the car’s make, model and license plate number.
3. If there are businesses, notify their managers or security and ask them to make an announcement to find the car’s owner.”
