New Castle Officials To Discuss Whole Foods Traffic Tuesday

Members of the town and planning boards refused to let the opening happen Dec. 12; now they must decide what's next.

CHAPPAQUA, NY — At the last minute, Whole Foods had to cancel its planned opening. There will be a meeting on the subject Tuesday night, New Castle Town Supervisor Rob Greenstein said.

The store is ready — the announced opening was to be Dec. 12 — but after a chain reaction of problems held up roadwork, including the state's slowness in granting a work permit for Route 117 and the closing of asphalt plants for the winter, town officials decided they wouldn't let developer Summit-Greenfield create temporary traffic patterns, the Examiner News reported. The concerns expressed by planning board and town board members in the Examiner's article sounded very much like the original opposition to the development.

Chappaqua Crossing, a development combining high-end retail stores, office space, luxury and affordable housing, took 11 years of review and lawsuits to get approval.

Could all that food already in the store go to waste? The permanent turn lanes from Route 117 onto Roaring Brook Road won't be done till the spring.
