Pedestrian Fatality on New York State Thruway

A man who police say was running from a state trooper was hit by a northbound car. A Chappaqua resident was a passenger.

A man died running from a state trooper on the New York State Thruway in Woodbury yesterday.

At 4:57 p.m. Wednesday state police conducted a vehicle and traffic stop on the Thruway at mile marker 48 northbound.

The trooper was attempting to take the driver, 37-year-old Bernell Wright, into custody for suspected drug possession when Wright resisted arrest and then ran into northbound traffic, police said.

He was struck by a vehicle driven by Martin Nicoll of Roselle, NJ. Nicoll lost control of his vehicle, exited the east shoulder and his vehicle overturned.

Nicoll and his passenger, Jill Weinberg of Chappaqua, NY were uninjured, police said.

Wright, a Bronx resident, was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The investigation into the incident continues. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident should call State Police at (845)782-8311.
