Post-Irene, Eateries Lose Thousands With Power Outages

Despite lost inventory, businesses returned quickly.

The Quaker Hill Tavern only got power back with time to reopen on Wednesday, which resulted in a loss of all of its perishable inventory.

"We just had to start from scratch," said owner Kelly Sullivan, who noted that it was the first time the tavern lost power in its six-year history in Chappaqua.

The loss, she said, is "well over $10,000."

While flooding has been among the most devastating factors from Tropical Storm Irene, for eateries, spoiled food from power has also posed set backs.

"Most of the foods have had to go," said M&R Deli owner Matt Henley. M&R, located in Mount Kisco, was closed Monday due to lack of power but reopened on Tuesday. By Wednesday, however, cases were quickly replenshed. Henley estimated his cost to be in the thousands.

Hector Cintron of Chappaqua's Old Stone Trattoria said their cost was in the thousands. They only reopened Wednesday, although he felt that business was fine.

Business quickly bounced back for Lange's Deli, too, which had to throw out a lot of food, according to owner Richard Lange.
