Saland Chooses Not To Run For State Senate
The New Castle Councilman cited his first-hand knowledge of the toll on family life.

CHAPPAQUA, NY — New Castle Councilman Jeremy Saland has decided not to seek the Democratic party nod to challenge state Senator Terrence Murphy for the 40th district seat. The 40th District covers parts of northern Westchester and Putnam counties.
Saland, whose father Stephen was a longtime state Senator, issued a statement:
After the votes were tallied on November 4, 1980, my father woke me from my sleep. While I have no personal recollection as a six year old boy, when he told me he won his seat in the NYS Assembly I said to him that I was happy that he did so, but sad that he had to go away. Although I could not be more proud of my father’s accomplishments, service, and tireless efforts to put the public’s interest first, go away he did for the next 32 years.
Knowing first-hand the toll public service has on one’s life and family, especially where one must remain away from a spouse and young children for extended time, I have decided not to run for the NY State Senate at this time. As overwhelming grateful I am for the support I received from friends as well as people I have never met before across all political affiliations, my family, along with managing my busy law practice, comes first.
As difficult as the decision was for me, I look forward to continuing my work as a councilman in New Castle and my ongoing commitment to public service.
After serving in the state Assembly, Saland's father represented Columbia and Dutchess counties in the State Senate from 1990-2012. A Republican, he was toppled after voting in favor of same-sex marriage in New York.

It has been most recently represented by conservative Republicans. Greg Ball held the seat before Murphy, an early supporter of President Donald Trump who was on stage at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland when Trump was officially nominated as the party's candidate.
