Sports Recap: Fox Lane Boys Lax Prevails

Fox Lane boys defeat Greeley in lacrosse; Greeley girls lax beats Ossining.

Confidence-boosting win

After losing its opening game to Bronxville 9-1, the Fox Lane boys lacrosse squad knew that it had to improve its game in a hurry.

A notable win came on April 9, when it beat visiting rival Horace Greeley 7-5.

“It was huge win, it was a big confidence builder for the season,” Fox Lane senior midfielder and co-captain Joe Corsi said. “Being that we lost the opener to Bronxville so badly, we needed this.”

Fox Lane got the game’s first two goals, which gave the host the momentum.

“The intensity built as the game went on,” Corsi said. “We got two goals in the first quarter and we just wanted to keep building on our momentum.”

Fox Lane kept building on its momentum with a well-balanced attack. That attack consisted of two goals and an assist from Graham Werner, two goals by Zack Wolosoff, one goal each from Dylan Faitell, Matt Krouch and senior co-captain George Lodge, two assists from John Horner and one assist from Anthony Grasso.

“There isn’t really any one person that is getting all the goals,” Corsi said. “We rely on everyone. Everyone is on the same page.”

Proven why he will be playing at Ohio State University next year was Fox Lane senior goalie and co-captain Cameron Stephens, who made 21 saves.

“He is just aware of every situation at all times,” Corsi said.

Horace Greeley junior attackman Jack Gladstone, who scored against the Foxes, acknowledged how difficult it can be going against Stephens and his defense.

“He has a lot of confidence, he is just such a really good goalie,” Gladstone said. “Their defense also played real well against us one on one. We couldn’t take as many good shots as we wanted too.”

Overall, Gladstone thought him and his teammates played very well, especially considering the Quakers were a young team going against a veteran-laden squad.

“We were missing two of our starting defenseman, Joe Hinderstein and James Bressler,” Gladstone said. “Fortunately, two of our freshmen really stepped up in Craig Motola and Charlie Mirisola.”

Joining Gladstone in the scoring column for the Quakers were Alex Scott, who led the Quakers with two goals and two assists; Dan Rubin and Mike Lentini, who each had a goal; and Ethan Frieder, who contributed an assist.

In goal, Gabe Weissmann made seven saves for Greeley.

Injury note

Fox Lane senior co-captain and midfielder Sam Robinson suffered an injury against Bronxville and has not played since. He said he expects to be back in a week and a half.

“I was checked on my hand,” Robinson said. “The tip of my pinkie finger came, not completely severed but the majority of it severed off so a plastic surgeon had to stitch the top of it back on.”

Robinson said he is just grateful he will be coming back soon.

“That was definitely a relief for me,” Robinson said. “Senior season, I was really looking forward to playing with everybody and the moment it happened, I was obviously disappointed. At least I will be coming back and at least it didn’t happen in the playoffs.”

Greeley girls defeat Ossining

Lead by the trio of Jess Kreisler, Issy Berkey and Hannah Dunn, the Horace Greeley girls lacrosse squad won its first game of the year when it defeated visiting Ossining 19-12 on April 8.

Greeley took a hold of the game before halftime as it outscored the visitors 15-6 in the opening half. The Quakers first-half outburst enabled them to overcome the talented Pride duo of Alex Cristello, who scored five goals and Molly Malone, who registered four goals and one assist.

Luckily for Greeley they have a highly potent trio in Kreisler, Berkey and Dunn. Kreisler rattled the cage for six goals, followed by Berkey, who scored five times and Dunn, who registered four goals.

Also scoring for the Quakers was Courtney Hill (two goals and one assist), Maura Grant (one goal) and Mirand Litwak (one goal). Arianne Crummer made nine saves for Greeley.
