Sports Recap: Fox Lane's Robinson Out For Year

Greeley's Townsend named All-State

Foxes lose captain

After suffering an opening-day injury, Fox Lane senior boys lacrosse co-captain, midfielder Sam Robinson, returned to the lineup and had two big games against Brewster and Clarkstown South, where he scored two and three goals, respectively.

Both games were victories for the Foxes (7-2).

It seemed he was back on track.

Unfortunately at practice on April 25, he tore his ACL and will be out for the season.

"It's really unfortunate," Robinson said. "I was really enjoying playing with the team. We had come along together, we had really gained some great team chemistry. It's really disappointing to have this your senior season."

While Robinson won't be able to play again for the Foxes, he definitely will assist his teammates in any way he can.

"I will still support the team, I will be at practice every day," Robinson said. "I will try and do everything I can to help the team."

Even though Robinson won't be able to play for his high-school team again, he is hoping to play the sport in college. He will be attending the University of Michigan, which is going to have a Division I men's lacrosse program for the first time next year.

Robinson will attempt to walk on and play for the Wolverines and if that doesn't work out, he will play for their club team.

"It would be amazing," Robinson said. "Michigan has had the best club team in the country the last few years and them going DI was a really big step. It definitely would be a very exciting accomplishment for me to be a part of but if not the club program is still going to be real solid and I definitely want to keep playing lacrosse."

While life goes on for the Foxes without Robinson, senior co-captain and attackman Joe Corsi said that it won't be the same without him.

"He was a huge asset to our team, especially the offensive side," Corsi said. "He was our top middie. It's going to hurt us now without having him in the lineup."

"We are going to have to have some guys step up and take more middie runs and get on the field more because you are not going to have that extra guy to sub off," Corsi added.

What the Foxes can build off of is that they have been playing better of late. Fox Lane has won five games in a row after losing to host Byram Hills 6-1 on April 12.

"After that game, we just didn't want to lose like that ever again," Corsi said. "We just have been practicing a lot harder, especially before game days, we don't mess around. We still do the regular practice plan and work really hard."

Townsend named all-state

This has been a year of numerous honors for Horace Greeley senior boys basketball star Matt Townsend, who recently earned another when he was named third team Class AA all-state.

Townsend said that he learned about the honor from one of his friends at school on April 27.

“I was definitely excited when I found out,” Townsend said. “I hadn’t given it that much thought. It was definitely a great honor to be recognized by the state. I am really happy.”

While he was happy he won the award, he wasn’t shocked either.

“I definitely set my expectations pretty high, for myself and the team,” Townsend said. “Our season probably ended a little bit shorter than we would’ve liked (the Quakers lost in the first round of the sectionals). We had a good regular season (15-3). As for this award, I wasn’t incredibly surprised but I was definitely very happy.”

He is also happy at the opportunity of playing basketball at Yale in college next season.

“I am really physched for it,” Townsend said. “It’s just going to be a whole another level in terms of preparation, playing experience and everything. I am really interested to see the step up in the level of play.”

A level that he will be ready for because of his work ethic.

“I think that one of the qualities that has helped me most is just a lot of hard work, putting 100 percent every time I step onto the court,” Townsend said. “That is going to help me at the next level.”
