Bobby Hackett, 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist to Join Swimmers and Host Swim Training Clinic
CHAPPAQUA, NY-- June 28, 2012 -- Swim Across America of Long Island Sound (SAALIS) announced today the launch of a new annual Chappaqua, NY-based swim event that will raise money and awareness for cancer research, prevention, and treatment. The inaugural swim will be held on Sunday, July 15, between 6:30 – 9:30 a.m. at the Chappaqua Swim and Tennis (CST) Club in Westchester. The CST event will offer swimmers of all ages and from all area pools the opportunity to swim one mile or half-mile as an individual or with a team.
In addition to swimming in CST’s event, Bobby Hackett, 1976 Olympic silver medalist in the 1500-meter freestyle and Katonah resident, will host a free swim clinic on competitive training techniques. “I’ve participated in a number of Swim Across America events in past years, said Hackett. “It’s a great cause and a lot of fun. I’m excited to join fellow swimmers of all ages and abilities at CST’s event.”
“We first got involved in Swim Across America by forming ‘Team Karen and David,’ honoring the memory of loved ones our community lost to cancer; last year alone, we raised more than $10,000,” said Dan Levy, coach of CST’s champion swim team. “Our young swimmers were amazed that their athletic abilities could be used to help raise funds to fight cancer. This year, we are opening our pool and launching a Chappaqua swim with a goal of raising $20,000.”
Liz Fuerstman, president of CST, added: “We are absolutely thrilled to be hosting our own Swim Across America event this year and invite anyone in Westchester to participate with us either by swimming or making a pledge to our site.” “Whether you swim, volunteer, or become a sponsor, Swim Across America is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together for a great cause.”
