West Patent Students Study American Holidays

They memorized the Langston Hughes poem, "I, Too, Sing America" as the kick-off.

Looking forward to the next three months of American holidays, some fourth- and fifth-grade students at West Patent Elementary School are studying the history and value of American holidays, especially Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day.

They kicked off their unit of study by committing to memory the Langston Hughes poem, “I, Too, Sing America."

Students discussed what it means to form a new government, the opportunities and struggles of living in a country of immigrants and their own ancestral history. Patriotism is at the core of this poem with its hopeful look to the future.
