Commack Library Renovation Moves Ahead

The Town of Smithtown's planned expansion of its Commack library branch is moving ahead with upgrades, including state-of-the-art equipment, and new children's and meeting rooms.

"As of now, the construction is moving ahead right on schedule," said Library Director Robert Lusak. "These are total renovations of all four locations, so we're all pleased that it's been going so smoothly."

"The game plan is that after Commack is re-opened in November of this year, Kings Park is next in the expansion and renovation process, and then finally the Main Branch in Smithtown," said Lusak.

On April 27, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Commack location saw over 80 patrons show up to watch members of the library's Board of Trustees and local politicians speak about what the future will hold for the library itself. This came several weeks after the vote for a $21 million dollar expansion and renovation plan was approved by the voters of the Smithtown Special Library District.

With the new equipment, more literary events and film screenings will be possible.  

"There was a limitation with space and community rooms in our four buildings. These renovations will solve that problem directly. When this is all completed, the library distrcit will really be able to have the type of events and programs that we've been hoping for for a long time ... Really, a local library is a community gathering place and we want to offer the most to our patrons," Lusak said.
