Long Islanders face their biggest challenge today since the oppressive heat closed in on the region. As reported by the Long Island Press, we're on track to break a 20-year heatwave record by the time relief comes this weekend.
Staying cool is of the utmost importance today- especially for elderly and young Long Islanders. Beat the heat, conserve water and do your best to limit your time outside. When there are heatwaves air quality alerts typically follow, thanks to the stagnant air mass that settles over the region. If commuting or travelling, try to utilize mass transit as much as possible. Be mindful that New York's aging infrastructure doesn't handle extreme weather well, so delays, traffic and cancellations are a possibility.
If you're staying local, air-conditioned malls and movie theaters are always a great option for relief. At home, you can follow LIPA's tips for energy conservation:
- Closing curtains and blinds to keep the sun outside
- Setting thermostats at 78 degrees or higher if health allows
- Delaying use of major, heat generating household appliances such as ovens, stoves, dishwashers and dryers, until after 8 p.m. when the temperature begins to drop
- Turning off non-essential appliances, electronics and other devices
If heading to the beach, bring plenty of water and sunscreen! Feel free to stop by your local TFCU branch to stay cool- we're all in this together!
