DEER PARK, NY — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced last week that a Deer Park dry cleaners met the cleanup requirements to address the recent contamination. According to the DEC, historic operations conducted Villa Cleaners on 1899 Deer Park Avenue by Vionpa Dry Cleaners, Inc. resulted in contamination of the subsurface with chlorinated solvents, including tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and breakdown products of this compound.

As a result, the site has been cleaned up under the State Superfund Program. Following site cleanup, the DEC determined that the site no longer presents a threat to public health or the environment. Villa Cleaners was then reclassified the site from a Class 2 (significant threat to public health or environment - action required) to a Class 4 (site properly closed - requires continued management).

Before the DEC became involved with the cleanup of the site, the contaminated sediments were excavated from on-site sanitary leaching pools and storm drains. In addition, Sub-Slab Depressurization technology was used to mitigate potential indoor air exposures to volatile organic compounds from contaminated soil vapor. A total of nine SSD systems were installed in 2011 to mitigate volatile organic compounds in sub-slab vapor. A pressure field test demonstrated that the sub-slab vapor under the buildings is being mitigated.
