NORTH BABYLON, NY - An Aldi and a Planet Fitness will be among the businesses looking to open in the newly redeveloped North Babylon Plaza, according to the real estate developer Basser-Kaufman.

The 90,000-square-foot shopping center on 1251 Deer Park Avenue is the home of the former Pathmark supermarket, which shut down following the announcement that their parent company, Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., filed for bankruptcy in 2012.

In 2013, the company announced plans to potentially sell the grocery store chain.

Now the fast growing affordable supermarket chain, Aldi, is hoping to take over the site of the former Pathmark. Aldi currently has 6 locations on Long Island including Lindenhurst, Selden, Bay Shore, Riverhead, Patchogue and Lake Grove.

The fitness chain Planet Fitness is also looking to come to North Babylon, making it the 11th location on Long Island.

In addition, CubeSmart, a self storage facility, is looking to lease a 100,000-square-foot, 2 floor storefront in the area, according to the site plans.

The McDonald's located in the plaza will remain. There are still some spaces available for lease.

Construction has not yet begun for the new businesses. The tenants have not been finalized and will have to wait until the planning board meeting on March 18, Newsday reports.
