North Babylon's Boy Scout Troop 399 enjoyed an adventurous camping weekend last month at the Alpine Scout Camp located in Alpine, New Jersey. One of the main reasons that most boys join scouting is adventure. Scouts camp the great outdoors, explore the hiking trails and take in nature. This is exactly what Troop 399's Leaders and Scouts set out to do and accomplished just that! They reveled in the archery range which had eight shooting positions. The BB range sported six target and used the bench rest position for shooting which the Scouts enjoyed mastering the art of shooting BB guns. They descended 500 feet on a switchback trail down the face of the Palisades to the riverside and climbed back to the top! They hiked 3.5 miles which included the Palisades climb among the scenic views of both New York City and the Hudson River. The rock wall climbing proved to be a challenging task; however, many Scouts reached the top! Evening programs included creating and performing skits and singing songs. A fun trip was had by all. Outdoor camping affords a great opportunity to build confidence, learn and utilize new skills, work as a team and also develop social skills!
