91-Year-Old Man Seriously Hurt After Rear-Ending School Bus: Police

Two students and the bus driver were also hospitalized for injuries Thursday, police say.

A 91-year-old man is in serious condition after police said his car rear-ended a school bus, causing two students and the bus driver to be hospitalized, in Dix Hills on Thursday.

According to authorities, the school bus, which was carrying students between the ages of 16 to 18 from the Wyandanch School District, was stopped at a traffic light in the northbound lane of Deer Park Avenue near MacNiece Place when a 2002 Hyundai Accent failed to stop at the light and struck the bus at 11:47 a.m.

The Dix Hills Fire FD Rescue Squad transported two students and the bus driver to Good Samaritan Hospital. The elderly man, who lives in Wheatley Heights, was taken to Southside Hospital for a serious head injury and numerous broken bones.

Dix Hills Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the scene with three ambulances, an engine, a heavy rescue truck, first responder and paramedic units. All units were under the command of captain Tony deCesare.
