Adopt a Ditmas Park Tree on April 15
The greening of Newkirk Avenue is in full swing with Street Gardening Workdays and adopt a tree initiative.
The mission to care for street trees along Newkirk Avenue is underway with the launch of Street Gardening Workdays, a partnership initiative between Newkirk Cares Collaborative and Compost for Brooklyn.
More than 30 street trees have already received the groups’ attention, and the organizations are gearing up for the next Workday on April 15 that will include participation from MillionTreesNYC. In addition to providing tree care education, MillionTreesNYC will give away free tool kits to anyone who adopts a tree at the event.
Community members of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in upcoming Workday events, including street cleaning, aerating soil, adding compost contributed by neighbors, planting trees and building tree guards – the first of which was constructed around a young tree at Marlborough Rd. and Newkirk Ave. during the March Workday. For the tree guards, the groups are also seeking the help of local woodworkers.
