Accident at Stephen Hands Path Has Resident Begging Town for Help

At least one resident believes the East Hampton intersection is a deadly accident waiting to happen.

EAST HAMPTON, NY - An accident Friday at the intersection of Stephen Hands Path and Cedar Street has at least one resident terrified that the site is a tragedy waiting to happen.

One resident expressed her concerns on Facebook, stating the intersection is one of the "most dangerous in town" with numerous accidents each year. She asked that a four-way stop be considered at the spot, which is located on town roads.

"Something has to be done before someone gets killed there," she wrote.

East Hampton Town Police confirmed that an accident did take place at the intersection Friday morning but no injuries were reported.

Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell agreed something needs to be done. "That's a very difficult intersection," he said.

In order for change to commence, the town board would need to propose a four-way stop sign and then hold a public hearing before potential adoption.

Cantwell said he and East Hampton Town HIghway Superintendent Stephen Lynch have had discussions about the treacherous conditions.

"It's a question of what's the best alternative there," Cantwell said. The town must also consider a roundabout at the spot, he said.

Much of the traffic is heading up or down Cedar Street and then turning on Stephen Hands Path to head west, he said.

"It definitely needs a change," Cantwell said. "I'm not sure at the moment what the best alternative is, but it's definitely a troubled intersection."
