Advisory Issued Against East Hampton Bathing Beaches Due to Heavy Rainfall from Hurricane

Suffolk Health Department issues advisory against bathing t 131 county beaches.

The Suffolk County Department of Health has issued advisories against 131 bathing beaches, including some in East Hampton Town, due to heavy rain forecasted from Hurricane Irene on Friday.

The advisory is based on the potential that bacterial numbers in excess of New York State standards that tend to occur in heavy rain.

The advisory was issued for Alberts Landing Beach and Devon Yacht Club Beach in Amagansett, Camp Blue Bay in East Hampton, Clearwater and Maidstone beaches in Springs, Culloden Shores, East Lake Drive in Montauk, and Havens Beach in Sag Harbor.

Beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff in the Great South Bay, Moriches Bay, Shinnecock Bay, Peconic Bays, Long Island Sound and within and adjacent to various north shore embayments.

Atlantic Ocean beaches are not directly influenced by stormwater runoff, the health department said.

Bathing is recommended suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by four successive tidal cycles, or a 48 hour period, after the end of the rain.
