East Hampton Trustee Charged With Driving Drunk, Speeding: Police

He was driving drunk 62 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone, police said.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — An East Hampton Town trustee was arrested and charged with driving drunk and speeding early Saturday morning, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, John T. Armstrong, 30, of East Hampton, was arrested at 2:49 a.m. on Cedar Street near Field View Lane in East Hampton after he was seen driving a 1999 Subaru Legacy 62 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone and failing to keep right.

Upon investigation, the "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected on his breath, his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet," police said. He performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests, police said.

Armstrong was charged with operating a motor vehicle with .08 of 1 percent alcohol or more in blood, first offense, a misdemeanor, and driving while intoxicated, first offense, a misdemeanor, police said.
