Friends Open Hearts For Local Mom Facing Health Challenges

A local mom, raising her seven-year old son, has been unable to work due to illness. Here's how to help.

EAST HAMPTON, NY— The community is coming together to help a local mom in her time of need.

A GoFundMe, "Benefit for Sarah," has been organized by Margaret Sherman on behalf of Sarah Focarino.

"Let me tell you a little about Sarah," she wrote. "She is a 39-year old graduate of East Hampton High School and a single mother to a seven-year old boy, Wyatt. She has been personal trainer at Body Tech since 2001 and also works at Indian Wells Tavern three nights a week to make ends meet."

Sarah, she said, was diagnosed with diverticulitis at 24 and underwent surgery to remove part of her intestines.

"She was informed then that there would be complications down the road. Well, down the road has come and Sarah has been out of work for the last two months. On top of her diverticulitis causing difficulties, she contracted C-Diff, or Clostridium difficile, the page explained.

"Sarah is hoping that if she can stay out of the hospital and keep the diverticulitis calm she will be able to have an uncomplicated surgery in the next month to correct her diverticulitis," the page said. "If she cannot she will have to have an invasive procedure and will be out of work for many months. All this time off, in and out of hospitals, has set her back financially more . . . she was already raising a child on her own. We appreciate anything you can do to help Sarah out during this difficult time."

A fundraiser was also held recently at The Stephen Talkhouse.
