EAST HAMPTON, NY — Friends are rallying to help a local contractor severely injured after a crash involving a deer.

A GoFundMe page "Motorcycle Accident," was created by Joseph Lombardo on behalf of John Loper of East Hampton. The page has raised $5,920 of its $50,000 goal so far.

Loper, he said, was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident involving a deer; he was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and was treated for injuries to his ribs, clavicle and right ankle. He has since gone through multiple surgeries to stabilize and repair his shattered ankle and the surrounding tissue, Lombardo said.

Loper spent more than weeks in the hospital with multiple sessions in the hyperbaric chamber to increase the oxygen saturation in his blood, with an eye toward the promotion of healing and fighting back against infection, he said.

"Thankfully John has been released from the hospital and is on the mend but has a long road ahead of him. As most of you know, John is a well known and well-loved fixture in our community. John is a self-employed contractor. Due to the accident and resulting injuries, he has been unable to return to work. As a result, his expenses are accruing. John has remained very positive and strong throughout all of this and asks you to assist in any way you can," Lombardo said.
