THE LEIBER GARDENS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
East Hampton, NY --- In 1956, Gerson Leiber purchased more than seven acres of land on Old Stone Highway in Springs. Every weekend from morning to night, he cleared the land. As the husband and partner of legendary handbag designer, Judith Leiber, and as an artist in his own right, Gerson had a highly developed sense of design. Once he had cleared the land, he began designing a series of gardens, each about an acre in size. With the assistance of a local gardener, Gerson began planting trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, putting down brick walkways, erecting gates, placing sculptures, planting an extensive vegetable and herb garden, etc. It took several years to complete, but when it was finished, it won the praises of landscape architects.

Among the gardens Gerson designed is a sculpture garden with serpentine paths and works by some of the most celebrated of modern sculptors; a garden of geometric hedges; and a garden that makes one feel as if one has entered a tropical rain forest. Each of the gardens maintains its own set of distinctive qualities, from meticulously sculpted hedges and intricate trelliswork to a thriving potager. The sculpture garden is adjacent to the Leiber Collection Palladian edifice that houses Judith Leiber handbags and Gerson Leiber’s paintings. An eagle’s eye view of the property would present an image of a maze of interconnected brick paths leading through a distinguished variety of specimens and gardening styles.
Gerson Leiber said, “I have been deeply affected by the gardens I have visited throughout the world (my favorite being Versailles) as well as by those I have imagined and dreamed of over the course of more than 50 years.”
For lovers of flora in a handsomely designed sylvan setting, the Leiber Gardens present a pleasant opportunity to enjoy one artist’s designs of natural beauty.
The Leiber Collection and Gardens are free and open to the public every Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday from 1 PM to 4 PM, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The address is 446 Old Stone Highway in Springs, East Hampton. For additional information phone (631) 329-3288 or email info@leibercollection.org
