Local Police to Continue Stepped Up Enforcement in Montauk For Holiday Weekend

This Labor Day weekend, police will be monitoring Montauk to keep the area safe.

While visitors might be vacationing in Montauk for the Labor Day weekend, local police will be working as their stepped up enforcement in the area following the Fourth of July craziness continues.

“We’re hoping the season ends on a positive note,” East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo said. “We’ve had a busy, long summer and we’re prepared for whatever comes our way.”

On Saturday and Sunday, three to four additional officers will be patrolling the Montauk area looking for any DWI, open alcohol, public urination, drugs, and any other general safety issues, according to Sarlo.

Local residents became angry after the “out of control” Fourth of July weekend, claiming that the party scene in Montauk has gotten out of control.

Since then, the Town Board agreed to authorize overtime funding for police, fire and code enforcement personnel for the summer and as a result, police have been stepping up enforcement throughout the summer.

Most recently, this past weekend police have received 340 calls for service (153 in Montauk), made nine arrests (three in Montauk) including three DWI’s, issued 40 Town ordinance summons (24 in Montauk) and issued 34 traffic and vehicle law summons (20 in Montauk), according to the department’s Facebook page.
