New York Man Busted for Driving Drunk After Accident on Rt. 27: Police

The driver was in an accident then sped off the road, with no lights, and into a traffic sign, police said.

EAST HAMPTON, NY - A New York City man was cuffed for driving drunk on Route 27 in East Hampton after a car accident, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, John M. Marino, 43, was heading east in a 1960 Volkswagen on April 3 at 3:30 a.m. when he was in an automobile accident and was then seen by a police officer heading east, off the roadway, at an "unreasonable speed" and with no lights on — and striking a 55 mile per hour traffic sign.

Upon investigation, Marino had the "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath," as well as slurred speech and bloodshot eyes; he was also unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests administered, police said.

He was charged with operating a motor vehicle with .08 of 1 percent alcohol or more in the blood, a misdemeanor, police said.

He was arraigned before a judge and paid $500 cash bail, police said.
