Police: Pedestrian Struck And Killed On Route 48 In Greenport
A Laurel man was killed Thursday evening while attempting to cross Route 48.

A pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to cross a marked crosswalk on Route 48 at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, according to Southold police.
Greenport Rescue responded and transported Howard Meinke, 86, of Laurel, to Eastern Long Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver, Eric Melrose, 41, of Greenport, had his car impounded pending a vehicle safety inspection.

No criminal charges were filed, but the case is pending further investigation, according to police.
