The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon. The man was taken to the hospital.

A man who was threatening to kill himself with a knife caused a lockout at East Hampton schools Wednesday afternoon.

East Hampton Village Police say they received a call from a suicide hotline at about 12:23 p.m. in which they were told that a man known to police had stated that he was going to kill himself and that he was on his way from Bridgehampton to the East Hampton YMCA to workout.

The YMCA, located on Gingerbread Lane, and the East Hampton School District were placed on a lockout. Exterior school doors were locked, no strangers were allowed inside schools and children remained off playgrounds during the lockout, police said.
