Unlicensed Montauk Man Caught Driving Drunk: Police

The man was nabbed on Montauk Highway in Amagansett, police said.

AMAGANSETT, NY — A Montauk man was caught driving drunk and unlicensed in Amagansett, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, Hobson M. Howell, 70, was arrested on September 4 at 9:10 p.m. on Montauk Highway near Bluff Road and charged with driving while intoxicated, first offense, a misdemeanor, third degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, and operating a motor vehicle with .08 of 1 percent alcohol or more in blood, first offense, a misdemeanor, police said.

Howell, police said, was driving east in a 1998 Jeep with a license that was suspended on April 29 for failure to answer an East Hampton Town Police summons. He was driving 56 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone with a defective front headlight and, upon investigation, had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, bloodshot, glassy eyes, slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests administered, police said.
