Board of Fire Commissioners Holds Annual Organization Meeting

Commissioner James Surless, Treasurer Raymond L'Hommedieu sworn in on January 3, 2022

The Board of Fire Commissioners of the East Meadow Fire District recently held its annual organization meeting on Monday, January 3, 2022, swearing in Commissioner James Surless and District Treasurer Raymond L’Hommedieu following their re-elections to their respective positions in December 2021. Commissioners are elected to five-year terms, while the District Treasurer’s term is three years.

The Board also elected Commissioner John J. Priest as its Chairman of the Board and Commissioner William J. Neill as the Vice-Chairman for one-year terms. In addition, Diane Bartone, previously the District Secretary, was appointed Deputy Treasurer, and Eric Becker was named the District Secretary. Becker, who retired from the NYPD, served three terms as Chief of the East Meadow Fire Department and is an instructor at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy.

The East Meadow Fire Department, which covers East Meadow and parts of Levittown and Westbury (Salisbury), is always looking for new members to join their ranks as firefighters or emergency medical personnel; no experience is necessary. The fire department provides the training required. There are numerous benefits associated with volunteering, including tax breaks, college scholarships, annual health checkups, life insurance, and a service award pension program, all at no cost.
