The Board of Fire Commissioners is a five-member body who are elected to five-year terms by registered voters residing within the fire district. Their prime responsibilities, which are set by state law, include levying taxes to provide the funding necessary to operate and maintain the East Meadow Volunteer Fire Department and adopting budgets that fund those day-to-day operations of the fire department. Commissioners approve the purchase of apparatus and safety equipment needed to fight fires and provide emergency medical services.
The mandatory resolution on the ballot also passed, allowing the Fire District to sell a piece of property it no longer needs and return it to the tax rolls. The proceeds from the sale of the property will be placed into the Fire District’s Reserve Fund.
