East Meadow FD Gets FEMA Grant for Life-Saving Equipment

EMFD awarded $354,000 for self-contained breathing apparatus.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded a grant to the East Meadow Fire District to replace life-saving equipment.

The $354,000 grant will be used to replace self-contained breathing apparatus that have become obsolete according to new safety standards.

The device is worn by firefighters to provide breathable air during fire and chemical emergencies. The new FEMA-funded models are more technologically advanced and now meet safety standards set by organizations like the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

“The FEMA grant is critical in providing East Meadow’s volunteer firefighters with reliable, state-of-the-art breathing apparatus,” said Commissioner Michael Finkelman, Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. “In addition, the $354,000 grant allows us to purchase vital equipment without increasing our budget or foregoing other necessary items.”

This grant is the first awarded to the East Meadow Fire District after many years of applying for AFGs.
