Although they could not properly honor their departed brethren this past Memorial Day, due to the cancellation of the community’s Memorial Day parade because of the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the East Meadow Fire Department recently gathered to pay their respects to those members who passed away during the last year.

Joining together in observance, and following recommended health-department guidelines, chiefs, officers, fire department members, the Board of Commissioners, the EMFD Ladies Auxiliary, and Benevolent Association representatives paid their respects by laying wreaths at the bell outside fire headquarters on East Meadow Avenue. The symbolic gesture has become an annual custom in East Meadow, as part of East Meadow’s Memorial Day Parade. The fire department used the occasion to conduct the annual inspection of its ranks and apparatus, which was also postponed due to the pandemic.

The memorial service was presided over by longtime East Meadow Fire Department Chaplain Rabbi Dr. Ronald L. Androphy, the East Meadow Jewish Center’s spiritual leader.
