The East Meadow Fire Department’s Annual Fire Prevention Open House returns on Sunday, October 3, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Fire Headquarters, 197 East Meadow Avenue.

The event, a community favorite, kicks off National Fire Prevention Week and offers residents the chance to meet the men and women volunteers who serve their community by providing essential fire, rescue, and emergency medical services around the clock. In addition, the open house allows residents to see the variety of apparatus and equipment we use in protecting the community and is an excellent opportunity to learn about fire safety through live demonstrations and interactive activities. And, as always, children are given a chance to ride on actual fire trucks!

This year’s National Fire Prevention Week theme is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” Knowing the difference between these sounds can potentially save you, your home, and your family. As of April 1, 2019, state law requires smoke detectors powered by a 10-year, sealed, non-removable battery or one hardwired to the home’s electrical system. The Board of Fire Commissioners urges residents to replace older smoke detectors with the new versions.

“The Board of Fire Commissioners and the members of the East Meadow Fire Department are pleased to open our doors and welcome the community back to our annual open house at fire headquarters,” said Commissioner William J. Neill. “Remember, we’re always seeking community-minded men and women to join the all-volunteer fire department, and the open house presents the perfect opportunity for those who are interested to learn more about how they can make a difference in their community.”

The East Meadow Fire Department, which covers East Meadow and parts of Levittown and Westbury (Salisbury), is always looking for new members to join their ranks as firefighters or emergency medical personnel; no experience is necessary. The fire department provides the training required. There are numerous benefits associated with volunteering, including tax breaks, college scholarships, annual health checkups, life insurance, and a service award pension program, all at no cost.
